The role of a parent is shaped by one’s own experiences—those during pregnancy, from the moment the newborn arrives, and then as time goes on.
The arrival of a child can raise many questions and even some apprehensions: the labor process, the birth itself, breastfeeding, the newborn’s crying, or even the return home.
Cecil Maternity Hospital offers a parenting preparation class—which you can take alone or as a couple—to support you through this new stage of your life.
This class, led by Dr. Anaïs Torregrossa (a pediatrician specializing in neonatology), covers various medical topics ranging from your stay in the maternity ward through the birth and into your child’s first months of life.
This interactive class will give you the opportunity to share your experiences, ask questions, and build confidence in your parenting skills.
The class can be taught in French or English.

From the first weeks of pregnancy through to the postpartum period.
The sessions are led by a midwife from Cecil Maternity Hospital who is certified in acupuncture and moxibustion.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient practice of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves inserting fine needles at specific points on the body in order to balance the vital energy known as Qi and to promote physical and mental well-being. This technique is recognised for its beneficial effects on pain management, relaxation and overall well-being.
Benefits of acupuncture during pregnancy:
1. Relief from nausea: acupuncture acts on certain specific energy points to ease nausea and vomiting, particularly during the first trimester, thereby improving the expectant mother’s daily comfort.
2. Help in managing lower back pain: by targeting specific points along the meridians, acupuncture relieves muscle tension and lower back pain that are common during pregnancy.
3. Improved sleep: by rebalancing energy and promoting relaxation of the nervous system, acupuncture helps reduce the insomnia common during pregnancy, thereby contributing to more restful sleep for the expectant mother.
4. Reduced stress: acupuncture promotes relaxation and reduces stress, which is beneficial for a calm and positive childbirth experience.
5. Induction of labor: certain acupuncture techniques can help stimulate uterine contractions, thereby promoting a more efficient labor.
6. Hormonal balance: acupuncture helps regulate hormones, which can be beneficial for a smooth progression of labor.
7. Emotional support: by balancing energy, acupuncture helps maintain a stable emotional state, providing additional support to the expectant mother.
8. Support for breastfeeding: promotes milk production by regulating energy.
